Dog & Cat Supplies: A Little about Shedding and Grooming Tools

With special thanks to Mr. Haraldur Karlson for his invaluable help in developing this article.

Most furry animals continuously shed their hair, which is a normal process. Since every animal goes through climatic changes it is important for an animal to shed because it advances, protects, and adjusts the animal body to the present climate. The fine and dead hair that remains closer to the pet's skin rises to the outer coat on a regular basis and causes your pet to shed in the house.

As more fine and dead hair builds up in the undercoat your pet begins to feel uncomfortable. This causes your pet to use his/her natural behaviors to try to remove the uncomfortable fine loose hair that remains in the undercoat. It is normal to see pets rub up against an object to remove the hair, or scratch, lick, or shake excessively to blow the hair out to make themselves more comfortable. This behavior can be noticed mostly in the autumn and the spring for animals that live outside. However, since our pets have been brought inside to live with us in our created comfort environment most furry pets continuously shed year round due to constant climatic changes.

Shedding is an important process for your pet to acclimate his/her body to the environment. Rubbing, scratching, shaking, and licking not only removes the dead hair, but also helps to stimulate new fatty acid to be transmitted into your pet's coat. This protects your pet from climatic changes. Removing the fine loose hair allows more oxygen and the sun to infiltrate into the skin, which helps the body to absorb vitamins that are very important for your pet to maintain good health.

The fine, loose and dead hair in the undercoat also causes matting. While the loose hair moves from the undercoat to the surface coat and tangles with the healthy hair it starts matting. To make "matters" worse, dirt, dander, and the moisture from licking, drinking or rainwater makes the mats hard and firm.

Mats are uncomfortable for your pet and are difficult for you to remove, but grooming with the right dog & cat grooming tool can prevent matting. The selection of the right dog and cat supplies can make all the difference. A grooming tool is very important to ensure that the fine, loose, dead hair and tangles are being removed from the undercoat. Dog & cat grooming tools should not pull out your pet's healthy hair nor should they scratch or harm the pet's skin.

Correct dog and cat supplies to maintain a healthy pet are essential, and grooming on a regular basis is an important mission for you and your pet. Grooming helps to control the natural behavior of rubbing, scratching, and shaking, causing the shedding problem all over your home. It controls matting so your pet feels more comfortable and you don't have to slave over your pet with scissors and clippers to remove the awful mats that could have been prevented by simply grooming regularly. It also helps you to control fleas that like to hatch in the mats as well as the hairball problem for cats.

For many years people have been buying combs to groom their pets at home. There is one drawback to a regular comb. It only splits small tangles in your pet's coat and it doesn't remove the loose fine hair from the undercoat. Humans use combs to style their human hair and that is about all you can expect when using a regular pet comb on your pets.

You will find similar results with slicker brushes. These dog anc cat supplies only remove a small amount of hair that gets trapped around the tines from the surface or by breaking up small tangles. Most of the loose hair will still rest in your pet's coat. Some people feel that by forcing the slicker brush further down into the coat toward the skin this will help to increase the effectiveness in removing more hair. This is a mistaken impression. All you are doing is harming your pet's skin with its fine, needle-like tines and making your pet feel more uncomfortable--sometimes to the point to where it starts to dislike your grooming method and grooming in general.

Dogs, cats, and rabbits all have very sensitive skin compared to larger animals. Some pets will cower when they see you coming with a shedding brush, rake, or blade. One of the reasons could be that you are using the wrong grooming tool. For example, the shedding blades were designed for larger animals and have been used for many years on horses and cows. Today, some pet owners use these tools on the dogs, cats, and rabbits. They work as a scraper. On shorter hair pets you can scrape the fine loose hair off the coat and bring it to the surface. However, unintentionally you also can easily harm your pet's skin, resulting in skin irritation or inflammation, which can turn into a bacterial infection.

You may wonder, why does my pet still shed immediately after being groomed? Well, the reason for this is because most of the commercially available grooming tools you have purchased don't remove the loose and dead hair from the skin up to the surface coat. Most commercial products at best only remove the loose hair from the surface, not from the skin or undercoat where the problem starts.

The inventor of the HairBuster™ shedding and grooming tool invented this product with his own pets in mind. The inventor was very well aware of all the existing problems of the grooming tools and shedding products that are sold in stores today. He wanted to ensure that both the pet and the owner enjoyed a harmonious grooming time. Harsh and painful grooming can develop into a time of where your pet tolerates the time but does not feel you love and care for him/her. In some cases your pet may become intolerant of grooming altogether--something most owners want to avoid, particularly when training your younger pet to get used to the grooming tools.

The HairBuster™ shedding and grooming combs are manufactured out of the highest quality, longest lasting quality carbon brass nickel steel, chrome plated and fitted with a comfort formed wooden handle. The HairBuster™ combs are also designed with a long lasting unique sleeve that is woven within the tines for an optimum grip, storage and removal of fine, loose, dead, and tangled pet hair. The HairBuster™ with its patent pending design, gently lifts up, grips, removes, and stores loose hair and dander between tines and the sleeve surface area. During the grooming process the loose hair and dander pushes up to the base of the comb backside of the grooming pattern. When the storing area is full, the hair is removed by stripping it off with your fingers.

These high quality combs are one of our best pet supplies and are specially designed with rounded tine ends to avoid scratching and harming of the pet’s skin. A periodic grooming with a HairBuster™ keeps your pet healthy, clean, and shiny. During the grooming process the rounded tines gently massage your pets skin, and in addition the friction between the sleeve and the hair, help to stimulate the fatty acids to transfer into the coat, which makes your pet's coat look shiny.

Clients, veterinarians and other institutions who have tried all other shedding tools on the market and compared it with the HairBuster™ comb to control shedding, matting and hairball problems have stated that there is nothing on the market that can compete with the result of the Magic HairBuster™ Shedding Combs. The ASPCA has also thoroughly tested the HairBuster™ shedding and grooming products and is in the process of issuing the SEAL OF APPROVAL for the HairBuster™ products. Additionally, in the July 2000 issue of "Cats & Kittens" magazine the HairBuster™ Shedding Comb was named as its Favorite Product. Remember, a good choice of dog and cat supplies are essential!
