Blueberry Guitars

I know you are probably asking yourself what a link for hand made acoustic guitars is doing on this website, but every now and again an opportunity presents itself and this is one of those times. Besides, next to my pets, music and acoustic guitars are two of my other greatest passions.

Every guitar player I have ever known seeks after “the” custom guitar—the one that sounds just like they think it should and looks phenomenal as well. Some years ago, I gave up looking, apprenticed to an experienced luthier (instrument maker), and began making acoustic steel string guitars myself. I thoroughly enjoyed this until health reasons forced me to give it up (My back was not tolerant of long hours of standing or sitting required for building handcrafted guitars). Still, my love for the guitar kept me mindful of great instruments and I would occasionally research builders to see what was new and exciting.

In the past few months I came across a new and exciting company that has come very close to that for which I would hope in a company what would be making a musical instrument these days—that it would be a labor of love combined with customer excellence while producing a guitar of great quality. Blueberry Guitars in St.Laurent, Quebec, Canada, seems to have this combination. In three short years they have continued to produce guitars of ever increasing quality with dynamic beauty and direct to customer marketing strategy.

Founder and owner, Danny Fonfeder, is as down to earth as you can get. He is a musician himself and the idea behind the company came from his own need to find a guitar while on his frequent travels. One might say that he was going through withdrawal and picked up an inexpensive guitar in the Orient while traveling and saw the beautiful woodworking being done in Bali by those who had been wood crafting as a family trade for more years than any of us would want to think. A connection was made in his mind and the rest is “history” in the making for those of us fortunate enough to own a Blueberry.

All Blueberry Guitars are handmade under the supervision of master luthier and educator in Vermont, George Morris, and Master Wood Carver, Wayan Tuges. I had the opportunity to visit with Danny Fonfeder in St. Laurent, recently, and I can tell you that each and every guitar I heard sounded wonderful and looked beautiful. Each case he opened was like opening a gift and receiving a unique and surprising wonderment of musical enjoyment.

I have shown my guitar to some professional musicians locally and they cannot believe what they are seeing. They all talk about the volume and the sustain, the phenomenal looks. The general comment is that it is hands down the most special guitar they have ever seen or played. You can take a look at the photos below and judge for yourself about the beauty.

If you are looking for a pristine example of perfection you “may” not find it in one of these guitars because I have never yet found a guitar that I could not find something that was not exactly perfect—in the sense that I might have like something esthetically different. HOWEVER, if you are looking for a guitar, that sounds absolutely fantastic out of the case; that has great volume; great sustain; great artistry and you are willing to put a little spit and polish into to it ever now and again—for a price that is unreasonably economical for what you are getting in exchange—THIS IS THE GUITAR FOR YOU!
