| Look what Good Housekeeping had to Say
The Good Housekeeping Institute ordered 11
improbable, but promising, catalog items and evaluated them with respected
doctors and a physical therapist. Some of the gadgets, we found, were helpful
even if they didn't work miracles.
Personal Air Purifier
WHAT IT IS: An electronic device resembling a beeper
that's worn around your neck.
THE CLAIMS: Using a revolutionary technology called
Corona Discharge to eliminate airborne pollutants, allergens, and viruses, it
ejects pure, clean air into your breathing space.
GHI REALITY CHECK: Their volunteers wear-tested this
air purifier. Two who are normally sensitive to dust or cat dander believed the
product reduced their allergic reactions. (The third, who doesn't suffer from
allergies, didn't feel any better.) When Institute engineers enclosed the
purifier in a small tank filled with cigarette smoke, the air quickly
cleared.
BOTTOM LINE: GH Institute Engineering Director John
M. Sun says the air purifier may be worth considering if you're allergic to
smoke or haven't been able to visit a cat owning friend because you
wheeze.

How Do the
Wein Personal Air Supply Models AS1500 and AS150MM Work?
The Personal Air Supply is a cold incineration
device that actually destroys airborne contaminants. Different contaminants are
neutralized and destroyed in different manners, depending on their chemical
properties. The Personal Air Supply is not a filtration device and no parts
need to be serviced or replaced (i.e. there are no filters to be cleaned or
replaced).
The Personal Air Supply uses the same technological
principles of the corona discharge technology that has been used by the
military to destroy toxic biological and nerve agents in the field and in
laboratories--as well as in industry to create "clean rooms."
The Personal Air Supply is not an ionizer which
uses electrostatic precipitation to negatively charge particles. It is a corona
discharge device, which though having an ionizing effect internally within each
unit, uses electronic plasma incineration, similar to a lightning strike, to
destroy airborne contaminents. The negative ions which are generated internally
are neutralized by the neutral grid of the Personal Air Supply before the
purified air is emitted towards the user's face.
The Personal Air Supply's negative corona discharga
process sets up a powerful, electrodynamically driven airflow, drawing the
pollutants into it and ejecting purified air toward the user's face. No fan is
used in this process.
The Personal Air Supply is not classified as an ozone
generator though small amounts of ozone are emitted as a by-product of the
corona discharge process. However, the OSHA guidelines define permissible
exposure limits to ozone as 0.10 parts per million. The Personal Air Supply
emits between 0.02 and 0.04 parts per million or 20--40% of the maximum
allowed.
Where
Can You Use the Personal Air Supply?
Airplanes--Many airline passengers become ill
during air travel due to poor cabin air circulation.
Homes and Public Places--With second hand
smoke or chemical odors.
Cars--Mold, mildew, dust and other allergens
live and breed in the carpet and upholstery.
Offices--Germs and dust travel through often
inadequate ventilation systems without being destroyed.
Restaurants, Theaters, Night Clubs, Elevators,
Casinos, River Boats, etc...
Allergy Seasons--Outdoors and indoors to
combat pollen and other allergen irritants.
